Lives and works between the Cape Winelands & Swartland Districts, Western Cape, South Africa
Johann F. Potgieter is a self-taught Jeffreys Bay-born artist residing in the Cape Winelands & Swartland districts of the Western Cape. A hobby artist since his youth, Johann sketched and painted sporadically whilst studying linguistics at the Stellenbosch University and working with the cultural heritage collection at the Stellenbosch Village Museum. His time among the Village Museum’s period houses inspired him to spend more time painting. This was the catalyst for beginning his career as a professional artist.
Potgieter’s childhood obsessions with Ancient Egypt and Star Wars—designing lightsabers and crafting “ancient artefacts”—was his true artistic start. All of his interests find some way into his art, especially fantasy, nature, esoterica, and folklore. Although he creates primarily in traditional oil painting, he does also utilise clay, discarded and natural materials, as well as writing fiction.
His works are currently exhibited at both Knysna Fine Art in Knysna, and at The Gallery at Grande Provence, in Franschhoek, South Africa.
