Zeitz MOCAA is re-opening on 22 October 2020 with an exhibition by, and for, Capetonians, titled ''Home Is Where The Art Is: Art Is Where The Home Is'. 'Cabo Obscura' by Daniël Hugo is presented in the 'Outside' theme and will be on view from 22 October 2020 - 31 October 2021.
This exhibition is a non-juried, democratic celebration of art belonging to and made by the people of Cape Town. Encompassing nearly 2000 works by children, emerging and established artists, hobbyists, crafters, photographers, and masterworks from private collections, it comes at a pivotal moment as the country emerges from a hard-hitting lockdown.
Zeitz MOCAA believes that there has not been a more pertinent moment for us to celebrate the lifeblood of our existence: people and art. For the past few months, many of us has been confined to our homes. Homes are the cornerstone of civil society and places where many of our memories are stored and made. The presence of art in our dwellings can play a central role in making an abode feel more permanent and secure.
After a three-week open call, residents responded and delivered artwork in person to several collection points. This included the museum and partner institutions across the larger Cape Town metropolitan: Tygerberg Art Centre, Parow; PJ Olivier Art School, Stellenbosch; Soha Gallery, Langa; Isivivana Centre, Khayelitsha; Butterfly Art Project and Casa Labia Cultural Centre, Muizenberg and Lalela Project, Hout Bay.
The exhibition is arranged according to five themes, each encompassing literal and metaphoric interpretations:
The Garden explores the life of plants, growth, cultivation, and labor
Outside encompasses landscape and public space
Inside includes interiors, domestic space and inner psychological states
Time notes the passage and marking of time as well as abstract expressions
Relations celebrates interconnectedness, relationships and communities
Home Is Where the Art Is is a love letter to art, artists and our city, Cape Town.

"A psycogeographic depiction of Devil's Peak, inspired by a dream. This forms part of an ongoing exploration, via different media, of the different ways in which the city of Cape Town manifests in my dream life – The Cabo Obscura." - Daniël Hugo
OUTSIDE
Stepping outside often requires moving from private to the public space. Outside is the bustling market or the edge of the road where neighbourhood children congregate. Outside is the open air where only distant echoes can be heard, yet outside can also be congested. Outside is the ocean. Outside is where the wild and domestic animals roam. Different types of landscape make up the outside, rural, urban, arid or lush. Outside are other people.
Issues around public space have always been contentious. Who really has access to what spaces? Does everyone feel safe outside? In many ways, whether intended or not, images of outside can open up important conversations. They make us think about whose vantage point is portrayed and why?
