The Creole Communist Codebase of the South African Decolonial Turn

Dr Moshumee Dewoo is a Mauritian-born African political historian specialising in feminist decolonial historiography of Global South resistance.

"Did anti-apartheid resistance open the door to liberal democracy in South Africa? Was liberal democracy ever its intended destination?

This talk answers both questions with a decisive no.

It shows that anti-apartheid resistance was never a liberal-democratic project but a Creole communist one. The post-1994 political landscape reflects continuity with that tradition."
