The Cover
Octavia Roodt did the cover again this year. Although we don't have a specific theme for the 2023 edition, the cover always helps to give a quick, overarching feel to the zine before you even open it. Octavia put a handful of fantastic proposals on the table with different themes, but in the end she, Toast and Francois Lion-Cachet (editor, klyntji.com) decided on the image of a man and a woman sunbathing/sunfrying in front of a squadron of solar panels. Phrases such as "the duality of sun pleasure" and "sun worship, with leisure & pleasure, alongside anxiety for country & environment" were thrown around on the WhatsApp group where Octavia conspired with Toast and Francois.

THE THEMES
There are a few poems with environmental themes in the zine, such as 'Green-growing wilderness' by Cheryl Traub Adler, 'A mismatch' by Erin Conway-Smith and 'Rooigety' by Theresa Postma. With a collection like this one, the themes flow from one to the other, from death and love to throwing flares in the pub, or messing with the noisy neighbors (or are you the noisy neighbours?), an ode to the BIC pen, Danie Marais gets hold of the evils of money, Bibi Slippers wonders what everyone is looking for, and then there are airports, Eskom, ancestors, sex, Sundays - and a Seahorse, with a capital letter.
A highlight among the longer pieces is Dutch journalist Fred de Vries's 'Niemandsland & Beyond' in which he recalls how this Koos Kombuis album became his lifeline when he first came to live in South Africa in 1992. Matthew Barge's quirky 'Memories are like spinach' is an in-depth plea to bring snails back to the Spur menu, and Jacqueline Schmahl's short story 'Soetkoekies' starts very pious but later smears the revenge nice and bitter and thick.
