"The thorns of this crown are constructed from shaped steel nails, and the crown plated in bronze.

A crown of thorns is a symbol we all know well but the story it evokes may become diluted with familiarity. The intention to make the crown, which is a violent and cruel device, beautiful, is to toy with the emotion of the viewer. A holy symbol of material sacrifice becomes an elegant trap of material temptation.

The use of the geometric Natal Plum thorn, glorifies the natural perfection of God’s creation. The natural beauty is here galvanised in something shiny, again to tempt the sinner, who like a magpie, must possess all that glitters. And so our primal impulse for personal gratification is tested, repeatedly. There is no single divine revelation and no relief, only continuous sacrifice. To behold the crown becomes painful."
