Echoes from the Deep

Framed in Kiaat wood

“In a time of rising sea levels and over-fishing, the deep ocean seems to be reaching out to us. Perhaps its call is a subconscious echo from our evolutionary past that has finally been heard as ocean activists and marine biologists rally to protect this last great mystery of our Earth’s biology.

Rising Tide and Echoes from the Deep are both monotype prints created using printing ink on Japanese washi paper. A monotype is a singular painterly print derived from a worked printing surface with the final image impressed onto paper by etching press. Both these works derive their colours and forms from my own personal love of the ocean.

Echoes from the Deep is a multi-layered print with a lightbox component that mimics the conflicting opacity and luminosity of viewing life under water. Light filters through kelp forest canopies and water depths in ever changing ways. Inspired by photography of the Cape’s unique kelp forests, this work foregrounds the beautiful mystery of underwater vision."
